The Pericu people here survived on a diet of fruit, seeds, roots, and shellfish, as well as hunting and fishing. Europeans arrived to the area in 1842. At the beginning of the 20th century, a fishing village began to develop and in 1917 an American company built a floating platform to catch tuna.
